Among Others

Sugestão de Leitura Fantástica

Among Others, publicado em 2011, faz parte do meu Desafio Literário 2017. Jo Walton já tinha escrito vários livros, mas foi este que a catapultou para a ribalta da literatura fantástica. A autora de origem galesa mudou-se para o Canadá depois de publicar o seu primeiro romance. Escreve ficção científica e fantasia e já venceu vários prémios incluindo o prémio Nebula e Hugo e o prémio de Melhor Romance de Fantasia Britânica por Among Others.

Jo Walton combina elementos autobiográficos com rasgos de imaginação ligados à fantasia, numa história onde uma jovem mulher luta para escapar à sua infância problemática enquanto se adapta a uma nova realidade. Among Others é um diário dessa transição onde esta jovem mulher se agarra à leitura fervorosa dos mais icónicos romances de fantasia e ficção científica publicados até à altura.

Já são conhecidos os vencedores dos prémios Hugo de 2015 em relação a publicações do ano anterior. Depois da grande polémica em volta das nomeações deste ano, houve várias categorias sem prémio atribuido. Destaque para o primeiro vencedor estrangeiro cuja obra premiada é uma tradução para The Three Body Problem de Cixien Liu que foi bastante falado no ano transacto. A tradução também esteve em destaque no prémio de Novelette para "The Day The World Turned Upside Down" de Thomas Olde Huvelt. Hugo Awards

Vencedores 2014

Já são conhecidos os vencedores dos Hugo Awards deste ano relativos ao ano de 2013. Ancillary Justice de Ann Leckie foi o vencedor na categoria de Melhor Romance, prémio que juntou ao Nébula, ao Arthur C. Clarke e ao British Science Fiction. Todos estes prémios pelo seu primeiro romance, que faz parte de uma trilogia cujos volumes seguintes vão sair nos próximos dois anos.

Destaque ainda para Gravity, que venceu na categoria de Melhor Filme e para o  episódio “The Rains of Castamere” da série Game of Thrones que venceu na categoria de Melhor Série, lenvando um prémio que tem ido para a série Doctor Who nos últimos anos.

Mais uma vez falo aqui na possibilidade de publicar alguns destes contos e romances por Portugal, as editoras deviam apostar mais nestas histórias. Os prémios foram entregues numa cerimónia que decorreu no dia 17 de Agosto em Londres na LonCon 3.

Hugo Awards

Nomeações 2014

Os nomeados para os Hugo Awards foram anunciados a 19 de Abril. Os Hugo Awards existem desde 1953 e todos os anos desde 1955 e são dados na World Science Fiction Covention (a Worldcon), que este ano será em Londres (LondCon 3) de 14 a 18 de Agosto. A Worldcon deste ano assinala os 75 anos desde a primeira convenção que teve lugar em 1939, por isso vão apresentar os Retrospective Hugo Awards para os melhores trabalhos de 1938.
