O brilho de Smaug!

Ali está ele, um enorme dragão vermelho-dourado, profundamente adormecido. Das mandíbulas e das narinas sai-lhe um som forte, de mistura com farrapos de fumo, mas os seus fogos estão amodorrados no sono. Debaixo dele, sob todos os seus membros e a sua enorme cauda enrolada, e à sua volta, estendendo-se através de chãos invisíveis, encontram-se incontáveis montes de objectos preciosos, ouro trabalhado e não trabalhado, gemas e jóias de prata manchada de vermelho pela luz encarniçada. 

Smaug jaz, de asas fechadas como um incomensurável morcego, parcialmente virado para um lado, de modo que o hobbit pode  ver-lhe a parte de baixo do corpo e o comprido e pálido ventre incrustado de gemas e fragmentos de ouro de há tanto se deitar naquela valiosíssima cama.

Ele é um mudador de pele. Muda a sua pele: às vezes é um enorme urso preto, outras é um grande e forte homem de cabelo preto, enormes braços e grande barba. Há quem diga que ele é um urso descendente dos grandes e antigos ursos das montanhas, que lá viveram antes da chegada dos gigantes. Outros dizem que é um homem descendente dos primeiros homens que viveram antes de Smaug ou de os outros dragões virem para esta parte do mundo, e antes de os gnomos virem do Norte para os montes.

Calculou o melhor que pôde e arrastou-se um bom bocado, até que, de repente, a sua mão encontrou o que, pelo tacto, lhe pareceu um pequeno anel de metal frio caído no chão do túnel. Foi um ponto de viragem na sua carreira, mas ele não o soube. Meteu o anel na algibeira, quase sem pensar, certamente não lhe pareceu de qualquer utilidade particular, naquele momento.
