Lewis Carroll, pseudónimo de Charles Dogson, diácono, matemático, lente da Universidade de Oxford e fotógrafo amador, contava estas histórias, que depois passaria à escrita, para entreter as meninas Liddell, filhas do deão da Igreja de Cristo em Oxford, especialmente Alice, a sua favorita.
