MOTELx

A sétima edição do MOTELx terá lugar entre 11 e 15 de Setembro no cinema de São Jorge. O Festival Internacional de Cinema de Terror de Lisboa deste ano terá como convidados Hideo Nakata, o famoso realizador japonês conhecido pelo filme Ringu (o filme original que teve uma adaptação americana), e Tobe Hooper, o americano que realizou The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Será feita ainda uma homenagem a Ray Harryhausen que faleceu recentemente.

O festival tem programadas algumas ante-estreias como é o caso de Byzantium de Neil Jordan, Chained de Jennifer Lynch, Kiss of the Damned de Xan Cassavetes, The Lords of Salem de Rob Zombie e The Conjuring de James Wan, que teve uma estreia bastante promissora em termos de bilheteira nos E.U.A.

Catching Fire

Cinema Fantástico

O novo trailer de Catching Fire foi revelado na Comic-Con. Para variar, as imagens mostram quase todos os acontecimentos mais importantes do filme. Apesar de as imagens não deixarem de ser espectaculares, podiam guardar algumas surpresas como é o caso do vestido a transformar-se, mas o trailer faz basicamente um resumo pequeno do livro. Não vou deixar de ir ver o filme ao cinema, até porque este será certamente um sucesso de bilheteira, mas continuo a acreditar que as distribuidoras podiam guardar algum segredo na divulgação de imagens promocionais.

The Hunger Games continuam este ano com a adaptação de Catching Fire, o segundo livro da trilogia apocalíptica distópica escrita por Suzanne Collins e que se tornou um fenómeno mundial tanto em termos de literatura como de cinema. A estreia está prevista para Novembro.

Já há um trailer com imagens da segunda temporada de Arrow. Depois do fim violento, trágico e destrutivo da primeira temporada, a série regressará com algumas novidades, incluindo novas personagens, como é o caso de Summer Glau (Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) que será Isabel Rochev. 

Os acontecimentos desta segunda temporada têm lugar cinco meses depois da tragédia que se deu no final da primeira, parece que o império da família Queen está em perigo e espera-se grandes revelações e desenvolvimentos com o surgimento de novas personagens inspiradas na banda desenhada Green Arrow.

A famosa autora inglesa da série Harry Potter publicou um policial sob o pseudónimo Robert Galbraith em Abril, em Inglaterra. O livro com o título The Cuckoo's Calling conta a história de Cormoran Strike, um veterano da guerra do Afeganistão que se torna detective privado e tenta desvendar o caso do suicídio de um modelo feminino. A autora queria saber como seria a recepção de um livro seu sem a pressão da fama e expectativa em relação ao que estava a fazer e parece que tanto os leitores como a crítica aprovaram o livro. O livro vendeu cerca de 1500 exemplares desde Abril, mas assim que se descobriu que Robert Galbraith era J. K. Rowling, as vendas dispararam.

A Noite e o Sobressalto é uma colectânia de sete contos de mistério com elementos do sobrenatural e de horror. Os contos são todos bastante diferentes e bastante interessantes de acordo com as temáticas em questão. Curiosamente, este contos fazem-me lembrar os contos de Sheridan Le Fanu e as suas confissões ao escrever com temor de não estar à altura da descrição dos acontecimentos ou ainda pelos temas abordados. A escrita é prazenteira, acessível e as histórias lêem-se num ápice. Confesso que lia mais uns quantos contos deste tipo, por gostar imenso dos temas aboraddos, mas principalmente pela forma como o autor aborada o aassunto, desenvolve rapidamente e termina deixando a história aem aberto ou como encerra a história, sempre de forma diferente, bem ao género das antigas histórias góticas que envolviam o sobrenatural ou das antigas lendas de mistério assustadoras.

De uma forma geral os contos são bastante satisfatórios, sendo os meus preferidos "Post Mortem", "O Caminheiro", "A Séance" e "Mandrágora" exactamente por esta ordem. Os mais fracos são "A Herança", que poderia ser mais bem trabalhado e "A Face Obscura da Lua", que apesar de ter uma forte componente saguinária, também poderia ter sido melhor elaborado. Desta forma, fiquei com vontade de ler o outro livro do autor, o romance O Diletante e a Quimera.

No primeiro conto viajamos até Berlim para uma sessão de espiritismo com consequência tenebrosas e revelações supreendentes. Este primeiro conto coloca em oposição o racional e as forças sobrenaturais, acabando com uma vingança interessante.

"A Face Obscura da Lua"

Este conto leva-nos até Praga e arredores, onde descobrimos um monstro terrível e cenas e imagens absolutamente assutadoras. Com uma forte componente do antigo romance gótico, onde havia criaturas atrozes em aldeias pequenas com mansões e propriedades grandes nos arredores, o leitor é transportado para o mundo dos monstros com alguma consciência. Creio que podia ter sido mais bem elaborado, mas as mortes e o sangue compensam em terror e horror.

"O Caminheiro"

O conto remonta às lendas e fábulas de antigamente, a uma figura mitológica que aterrorizava os viajantes solitários. Talvez seja o mais ambiguo por nunca chegarmos a saber ao certo de que forma o caminheiro sugava a energia aos viajentes, podendo ser através de feitiços, do toque ou de alguma espécie de veneno ou ainda pelas três. Termina de forma surpreendente e inesperada.

"Mandrágora"

Aqui, vamos a tempos idos, onde a religião e a caça às bruxas e aos objectos de bruxaria inperavam num ciclo vicioso, onde a punição por possuir elementos ligados à bruxaria era a morte. De forma curta e concisa, o autor conta como este ciclo vicioso acontece.

"Post Mortem"

O leitor viaja até ao Alentejo profundo para testemunhar conversas estranhas e visões persistentes. Confesso que este conto é o meu preferido, exactamente pela forma como termina, misturando a loucura e o suícidio num ciclo vicioso, onde haverá sempre uma próxiam vitima.

"O Monstro Marinho"

Este pequeno conto remonta ao antigo mundo da mitologia grega relacionada com monstros marinhos. É pequeno e, apesar de não ser o melhor conto, tem o essencial, acabando de forma inesperada.

"A Herança"

Neste último conto vamos até Londres, ao mundo dos negócios maritimos e a maldições dificeis de quebrar. O elemento sobrenatural aqui é poderosa maldição com poder suficiente para atingir várias embarcações comerciais. O conto tem também uma parte racional, lógica e prática dos acontecimentos e lida com as dificuldades de acreditar em tais possibilidades sobrenaturais. Este conto, que também é o mais lomgo, é o que podia ter sido mais bem trabalhado a nível da escrita.

Clube de Leitura Bertrand do Fantástico

 A próxima sessão do Clube de Leitura Bertrand do Fantástico de Lisboa terá lugar no dia 14 de Junho, Sexta-Feira, pelas 18:30 na Bertrand do Picoas Plaza e será mediada, como sempre, por Rogério Ribeiro. O livro a debater será A Noite e o Sobressalto de Pedro Medina Ribeiro e sessão conta com a presença do autor português. Também para debate estão as obras de Edgar Allan Poe.

Pedro Medina Ribeiro nasceu em Lisboa em 1977. Descobriu o prazer da escrita na Faculdade de Ciências onde foi colaborador de publicações universitárias. No entanto, quando terminou a licenciatura seguiu outra paixão: o ensino. Actualmente é professor de Físico-Química em Lagos, localidade onde vive.

Do génio de Edgar Allan Poe já haverá pouco a dizer. O autor, poeta, editor e crítico literário americano viveu entre 1809 e 1849 e é conhecido pelas suas histórias de mistério e macabro. Entre as suas obras mais conceituadas está o poema The Raven e contos como The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fall of the House of Usher e The Murders in Rue Morgue.

As Séries Televisivas Mais Bem Escritas de Sempre

Recentemente, a associação norte-americana Writers Guild of America, publicou uma lista com as 101 séries mais bem escritas de sempre.

O primeiro lugar é de Sopranos, a aclamada série sobre uma família mafiosa, o segundo lugar é de Sienfeld, a comédia mais irreverente dos anos 90, e em terceiro lugar ficou The Twilight Zone, que mistura elementos dos fantástico com thriller psicológico, suspense e alguns twits inesperados.

Apesar de não discordar do top três, até porque só vi uma destas séries, tenho algumas dúvidas em relação a algumas séries muito bem classificadas que não considero tão boas quanto isso e outras menos bem classificadas que mereciam mais destaque. Creio que séries como Band of Brothers, Dexter e Homeland ficaram muito mal classificadas. Por outro lado, Mad Man está muito acima do esperado e há ainda o caso ambíguo de Lost, que tem uma primeira temporada muito boa, mas que perde o interesse nas seguintes. Seguindo a linha de pensamento em relação a Lost, também Heroes merecia estar aqui pela primeira temporada, que depois se perde completamente nas seguintes.

Feira do Livro de Lisboa

A Feira do Livro de Lisboa terminou dia 10 (Segunda-Feira), o dia de Portugal, segundo o que parece, com saldo positivo em termos de visitantes. E pelo que vi dos dias que lá estive, houve algumas editoras que devem ter tido bastante lucro. Em algumas delas era mesmo difícil comprar livros devido à grande afluência.  Por motivos financeiros não foi possível investir em mais livros, mas sempre consegui comprar alguns. Consegui alguns super baratos da antiga Colecção Argonauta, o primeiro volume da Jacqueline Carey, um livro costuma ser um bocado caro e um livro do Barreiros também baratinho.

Nota negativa para os preços praticados a nível geral, cujos descontos não eram realmente relevantes.
